Requirements

All volunteers must meet these baseline requirements:

Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age or older
Resident of El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove or Santee
Agree to and successfully pass a criminal background check

Commitment

Attend a minimum of three bimonthly team meetings per year
Volunteer for three public events per calendar year or actively participate on one of our subcommittees
Completion of FEMA IS 100 & IS 200 on-line classes
Attend the following supplemental training classes:

Steps to membership

Becoming a member of East County CERT includes the following steps:

1. Register Your Interest

Tell us of your interest by providing your name and contact information.

2. Submit Application

After registering your interest, you will be contacted to submit an online application.

3. Interview

Your application will be reviewed and you will be scheduled for an interview with the EC CERT administrator. This will clarify expectations of both the applicant and the program.

4. Online Training

Training starts out with online lectures. It will take about 12 hours to complete and can be done at your own pace and convenience. You will receive a certificate once you have completed the training.

5. In Person Training and Demonstrations

Next will be in person demonstrations and training. It will be conducted over three consecutive Saturdays. Specific dates will be provided to those accepted after the interview process. Note that space for in person training is limited.

6. Background Check

All prospective members must undergo the LiveScan process and pass a background check. This will be provided at no cost to the applicant once the in person training has been completed.

7. Swearing In

Once you have passed the background check, you can be sworn in. This involves signing the Code of Conduct and agreeing to follow CERT policies.

8. Demostrate Commitment

During your probationary period, you must demonstrate your commitment by participating in CERT events and exercises. You will be loaned equipment as necessary.

9. Issuance of Gear

Once you have passed your probationary period, you will be issued your own helmet, vest, and backpack.
